The Story Behind the Artwork
Bark cloth is Uganda's most iconic traditional art and one of the oldest textiles in the world. It is made from the bark of the mutuba (fig) tree by the Baganda people. Traditionally used for royal garments, ceremonies, and burials. Today it is used for fashion, interior décor, paintings, and crafts. UNESCO has recognized Ugandan bark cloth making as an element of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
