The painting is the depiction of the profound declaration of faith and trust in God for protection and preservation as made by David in the Bible book of Psalm 23 (verse 4). While the valley is littered with skeletons and corpse of ancient and recent victims of their ordeals in the valley of death, the Psalmist - David could be seen walking through the same valley fearless and unharmed. God himself takes the form of a shepherd protecting and caring for the vulnerable and helpless sheep.
The Story Behind the Artwork
As contained in the Bible book of Psalm 23 (verse 4) this is a graphic presentation and clear picture of God as a caring shepherd with power, ability and promise to protect and preserve the believers in whatever life threatening situations they may find themselves, offering peace and hope through every part of life. The valley represents hardship and every scary and perilous moments of life, fear goes away because God is present in those moments and as the shepherd he uses the rod to fight off danger and the staff to guide the flock of sheep. The valley of the shadow death holds no fear for the child of God. The existence of a Shadow presupposes the presence of light, God is the Light.
