Nnè - The Strength We Inherit There is a kind of strength that does not need to announce itself. It is found in the woman who carries a child while carrying the weight of everyday life. In the mother who gives, protects, provides, and keeps moving even when no one sees how much she carries. Nnè is my reflection on the strength of the Igbo woman and the role of motherhood in preserving family, identity, and heritage. The figure carries a child close to her while moving forward with what appears to be an ordinary day. Yet there is nothing ordinary about her strength. The deep blue of her head covering and wrapper speaks to dignity and depth, while the warmth of the surrounding gold and orange suggests home, life, memory, and the warmth passed from one generation to another. For me, the work is not simply about a mother carrying a child. It is about what is carried beyond the child like culture, memory, values, sacrifice, identity and hope. In many Igbo homes, motherhood is deeply connected to the continuity of family and tradition. This painting pays tribute to the women who quietly become the bridge between generations. She carries more than a child. She carries a people.
