The brilliant colors and elaborate masks left an indelible mark on my memory. Over time, I came to understand that these masquerades are far more than just costumes—they are the sacred keepers and living embodiments of our ancestors. Like an ancient tree floating down a timeless river, the will of our ancestors has been carried through generations to reach us today. That ancestral will is inherently enigmatic and mysterious. Every lesson, message, and historical narrative is intricately woven into the attire, masks, and performances that breathe life into these events. This piece taps into the profound mystery and intriguing beauty of the traditions passed down through our bloodlines, honoring the voices that continue to shape who we are.

The Story Behind the Artwork

Sometime before creating this piece, I had a conversation with my father that completely shifted my perspective. He shared chapters of his past and our family lineage so rich and surreal they felt like scenes from a movie. It was an intriguing history that opened a window into the old world, giving me a profound understanding of who he is and the experiences that shaped him. While I still grapple with some of the difficult truths he revealed, one cannot argue with history; we can only strive to understand and grow from it. I am deeply grateful for his vulnerability and find myself wishing he had shared even more. Ultimately, one powerful truth echoed through everything he told me: most people do the absolute best they can with what they have, surviving and hoping for a better future for those who follow in their footsteps.
