This work, titled Contemplation, is an intimate portrait exploring inner resilience, identity, and vision. The central figure is rendered in deep, luminous black — bold, unapologetic, and serene. Her shaved head and small earring speak of simplicity and self-acceptance. Her eyes, turned slightly upward, are not looking at the viewer but beyond — in a state of reflection, hope, and quiet defiance. The background is a textured sage green layered with my signature language of symbols: white linear patterns reminiscent of architectural blueprints or ancestral markings, and floating yellow circles with black pupils — eyes that watch, memories, societal expectations. Against this busy world, the figure remains still, centered, and grounded. I paint Black skin not as shadow, but as light. The contrast between the deep black of the figure and the vibrant, almost electric green and yellow around her creates a tension — the tension of being yourself in a world that is always watching and interpreting you. This painting is part of my ongoing exploration of what I call the Sweetness of Being — finding peace and power in simply being who you are. The work invites the collector to pause and reflect on their own inner gaze. Signed Ayewa at the bottom.
